
Swim spas are built tough. The cabinet, shell, and plumbing can handle cold weather. What they can’t handle well is sustained exposure to heavy snow accumulation on the cover, wind-driven debris, and the constant freeze-thaw cycle that degrades seals, fittings, and cover material over time.
If you live in a climate with real winters — anywhere that gets accumulating snow or winds above 40 mph regularly — protecting your swim spa isn’t optional. It’s the difference between a 10-year investment and a 20-year one.
The Cover Isn’t Enough
Swim spa covers are designed to insulate and keep debris out. They are not designed to handle structural snow loads. A standard foam cover on a 15-foot swim spa can accumulate hundreds of pounds of wet snow before you notice it sagging. That weight crushes the foam core, breaks the vapor seal, and eventually cracks the cover itself. Replacement covers for swim spas run $800–$2,000.
Wind is the other cover killer. Sustained winds lift cover edges, break straps, and in extreme cases rip covers off entirely. Once the cover is compromised, your swim spa’s water is exposed to freezing temperatures, falling debris, and accelerated chemical depletion.
Enclosures: The Permanent Fix
A solid-roofed enclosure eliminates snow and wind as factors entirely. The roof handles the load — Westview’s Duraflex roofing carries ratings of 30–40+ pounds per square foot, which handles 2–3 feet of heavy snow without concern. The walls block wind. Your cover still goes on the swim spa, but it’s no longer fighting the elements alone.

Anchoring for High-Wind Areas
An enclosure only protects against wind if it’s properly anchored. In exposed areas — hilltops, coastal zones, open plains — use anchor bolts at every support stud, not just the corners. Roof bracket upgrades increase the structure’s wind and snow capacity from the standard 30 psf up to 40+ psf.

Seasonal Prep Tips (Even with an Enclosure)
- Inspect the roof before winter: Check for loose screws, gaps in the skylight seal, or debris in gutters. Five minutes of inspection prevents leaks.
- Clear the roof after major storms: While the roof can handle significant loads, brushing off heavy wet snow after a big storm reduces sustained stress.
- Keep windows closed in storms: Open windows during a blizzard invite snow inside. Close and lock everything before severe weather hits.
- Maintain your cover anyway: The enclosure protects the cover from the worst abuse, but the cover still insulates the water. Replace worn covers before they lose thermal efficiency.
